HOW TO ELEVATE YOUR COFFEE TABLE

Words by Tilly Stewart

Coffee tables can be more than just a place to rest your coffee...or wine (my preferred option), your coffee table can serve as a focal point within your living space and elevate the ambiance within the room. This week I'm going to delve into the art of coffee table decor and the effective techniques you can use to create a captivating and stylish centrepiece within your living room.

Through the careful selection of elements and specific arrangements you can play around with your coffee table decor until you establish an aesthetic that suits your own personal style. There's a lot of creativity through coffee table styling as you can add a fresh touch frequently by rearranging items and creating different displays whether thats to match your mood or the season.

LAYERING & LEVELS

When curating your coffee table, consider incorporating varying heights as this will create visual interest and also add a sense of dimension and depth. Playing with different heights will equally create a balanced arrangement and allows for the opportunity to use your standard decorative objects in an  unconventional way.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION

Pick items that can act as a centrepiece and a focal point but also are conversation starters. If you select items that are unique and unusual and perhaps not your typical coffee table decor, then this will immediately draw attention and add an element of surprise for people to discuss. Take into consideration introducing objects that can be engaged with, for example; chess or back gammon sets- many of these objects come in stylish versions that can fit with your surrounding decor.

THE ART OF SIMPLICITY

Regardless of what you might think, coffee table decor doesn't necessarily mean filling every inch with decorative items. The art of simplicity can truly make a statement in itself. By keeping the decor clean and minimalistic, you are allowing the beauty of each carefully curated item to speak for itself. Consider a statement vase filled with fresh flowers enough of a focal point to draw attention to the coffee table, or your favourite selection of books paired with a sculptural item. Embracing simplicity not only brings a sense of calm (for those that hate mess or busyness), but also allows for functionality.

INTRODUCING TEXTURES

A varying selection of textures also helps create that sense of dimension and depth within the room as well as adding a visual and tactile interest. Consider incorporating elements such as a textured ceramic vase, multiple hardcover books, a metal bowl or marble tray. By mixing a variety of textures you're creating a dynamic and inviting vibe to your coffee table. This is also something that can evolve throughout the seasons, for example you want to create something moodier and cosier for the winter months and lighter and fresh for spring/summer.

JUXTAPOSITION

The thing I love most about interior design is that there really are no boundaries when it comes to your own personal style. For me, juxtaposition is an important factor to consider when creating unique and unusual designs. By introducing various design styles, textures and history within your coffee table decor, all arranged in a harmonious composition, this allows for life to be introduced into your interior as well as undeniable visual attraction.
